Using strategies of conceptualism, appropriation, photography and painting, the work of Juan Capistran, investigates socio-political issues. Through transdisciplinary projects that question notions of class, identity, power and revolution, Capistran investigates the rejection, assimilation and mutation created from the collision of singular and multiple systems of ideology. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including The Bronx Museum, Bronx; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; Chisenhale Gallery, London; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and Kurimanzutto, Mexico City.
Mandujano / Cell (Hazel Mandujano & Juan Capistran)
In 2016 Juan Capistran and Hazel Mandujano opened Mandujano/Cell, a contemporary visual art project space that works with local, national and international artists on exhibitions and publishing. Mandujano/Cell is comprised of three physical spaces: design studio, book store and gallery space
Mandujano is a book shop curated by Hazel Mandujano that specializes in low edition and multiples, rare books and objects produced by artists and small publishers.
Cell is a project space organized by Juan Capistran. Cell seeks to infect by organizing projects and exhibitions with artists locally, nationally and internationally.
Founded in 2011 by Keri Oldham and Jacob Rhodes, Field Projects is one of the very few Artist Run Spaces in Chelsea, New York’s Blue Chip Gallery district. Focused on giving access to underrepresented, emerging and mid-career artists through monthly exhibitions, pop-up exhibitions, Art Fairs and online exhibitions, Field Projects aims to constrict the gender and ethnic gap in the current Art World. FP does not represent any artist but hopes to help artist further their careers as a space to create an ambitious exhibition. FP is currently run collaboratively by Rachel Frank, Alissa Polan, Kristen Racaniello, and Jacob Rhodes.
