Bottrop’s work has been characterized by reducing the act of painting to pure graphite on large-scale, raw canvases stapled directly onto the wall. In the process of painting, Bottrop enhances simple and distinct forms of squares, circles and triangles to a gestural, rough overlaying of lines that emanate an energetic vigor and generate spatial depth through the painterly gesture. Through his primary use of charcoal and graphite, the artist often looks at the disinvestment in economies and labor in small cities and historical sites of manufacturing, as in his hometown in Germany. With this new body of work brings this same research into the local economies and communities within Mexico.
