¡ARTE QUE RICO!
In 2019, Material Art Fair will celebrate its sixth edition from February 7th – 10th at the Frontón México, an Art Deco-era sporting arena located directly alongside the breathtaking Monument to the Revolution, in the heart of Mexico City.
Material’s milestone fifth edition was described as “an architecturally-charged, holistic physical and cultural experience”1 and “a living monument to the vitalization of Mexico City as a distinctive part of the international art community,”2 which was “packed with collectors, curators, and artists”3 and “wowed visitors”4 with “an impressive display of artistic talent”5 and “innovative individuality.”6
The sixth edition will again inhabit the iconic, multi-level structure that debuted this past February, designed by the Mexico City-based architectural studio, APRDELESP, as a site-specific appropriation of the Frontón México’s principal jai alai court.
Material’s organizers look forward to seeing you during Mexico City’s most important and exciting week for contemporary art, at an art fair that’s truly unlike any other in the world.

Material’s selection committee is comprised of the galleries, LABOR, Mexico City; François Ghebaly Gallery, Los Angeles; Andréhn-Schiptjenko, Stockholm; and Supportico Lopez, Berlin. They carefully review each and every one of the proposals received from galleries all over the world in order to arrive at the most exciting, uncompromising and diverse group of exhibitors possible.
The fair’s 2018 edition was its largest yet, featuring a total of 78 galleries from 18 countries and 33 cities. Material’s exhibitors are divided between the fair’s principal section, which showcases a selective group of both emerging and established commercial galleries, and the projects section, which features fresh voices from artist-run and non-profit exhibition spaces as well as a new generation of commercial galleries.
The deadline to apply is Friday, August 3rd.
Central to Material’s public program is IMMATERIAL, a dedicated series of performance-based works curated by Michelangelo Miccolis, which will celebrate its third edition in 2019. Past editions have included works by acclaimed artists like Maria Hassabi, Mårten Spångberg, Adriana Lara, Geoffrey Farmer, Dora Garcia, and Cally Spooner, among others.
Material’s organizers look forward to announcing the complete program for IMMATERIAL VOL. 3 later this year, along with all of the other exciting activities and special projects to take place next February.
